Independent experts of the United Nations on yesterday called on the United States to wrap up its federal review of the Trayvon Martin case, and move on to the issue of examining stand-your-ground laws.
Human rights expert Verene Shepard said, “We call upon the U.S. government to examine its laws…to ensure that such laws are in full compliance with the country’s international legal obligations and relevant standards.”
“States are required to take effective measures to review governmental, national and local policies, and to amend, rescind or nullify any laws and regulations which have the effect of creating or perpetuating racial discrimination wherever it exists,” said the Special Rapporteur on racism, Mutuma Ruteere.
